A soft or spongy spot in the floor is usually moisture damage to the subfloor underneath — from a roof leak, a plumbing leak, or a torn belly wrap letting in damp air. It doesn't fix itself, and it spreads the longer it's left.
Before any subfloor gets patched or replaced, the actual moisture source needs to be found and fixed — otherwise the same spot fails again in a couple of years. That often means checking the belly wrap and roof at the same time as the floor itself. Small localized spots are a patch job; larger areas may need a section of subfloor replaced outright.
